How Mumbles, Swansea became the UK’s first “Defib Friendly” community

1. A small working party was formed from the community.

2. They understood where the current 24 hour and non 24 hour defibrillators were.  Then Identified where new units were needed.

3. A budget was established so to purchase these new units, signage and other items. Fund-raising started through various means.

4. Once funds are raising, defibrillators, signage, stickers, information boards were purchased and installed.

5. Community training and social media campaign runs to inform all levels of the community.

A Community Approach

You need to optimise what already exists within your community by:

In 7 Simple Steps:

• Move defibrillators outside making them 24-hour public accessible.
• Encourage privately held defibrillators to be used by the public in an emergency and site external signage.
• Purchase additional defibrillators to fill the gaps within your community – blanket coverage.
• Traders and retailers will be encouraged to place a personalised window sticker which will provide directions to the nearest located defibrillator.
• Community signage to be installed with directions and educational information.
• Establish ‘Champions’ from the community to help promote the use of defibrillators.
• Organise regular community training sessions to be provided free of charge.
